About Scohaboy Bog and Sopwell Woodlands

Size: 393ha  Status: Natural Heritage Area (NHA)

Cloughjordan Community Development Committee (CCDC) is a registered charity and acts as an umbrella group for 10 local voluntary groups. CCDC are local partners with Coillte and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in Scohaboy Raised Bog Restoration LIFE Project. The site was subject to peat cutting and afforestation. These activities along with draining and burning caused significant damage to the bog resulting in habitat loss and degradation. Consultation with landowners and the local community has had very positive outcomes in changing perceptions on the value of and management practices on the site. Scohaboy is now a popular outdoor amenity and walking trail for North Tipperary and the wider region.
