Biodiversity week kicks off on 19th May and runs for over a week until Sunday 28th. There are lots of free events happening across the country to celebrate Ireland’s wonderful nature. With the biodiversity crisis, it has never been more important for us to connect with our natural environment, cherish and protect it. Many of our members are doing just that by undertaking conservation projects on wetlands, and promoting and protecting the wonderful biodiversity our bogs have to offer.
Join us on Saturday 27th of May at Cloncrow Bog, Tyrrellspass for a wonderful day of guided walks and talks on the bog, nature connection and citizen science. We will have two guided walks on the day, and you are welcome to attend one or both.
The first walk will begin at 8:30am from Tyrrellspass castle and will take us out over Cloncrow Bog via the newly completed boardwalk, through the adjacent woodland and back into the historic village to the castle for tea and refreshments. On this walk you will learn about the birds and moths of the bog and nearby wood, from local biodiversity experts and citizen scientists.
The second walk will also commence at the castle, at 11:30 am, and after walking over the boardwalk, will exit the bog, and walk up an enchanting laneway adjacent to the bog. On this walk, local experts will point out the numerous plants of the bog, and nearby hedgerows, as well as butterflies we hope to see. We will return to the castle by 1:30pm for a light lunch. You are then welcome to stay for a demonstration on how to submit recordings of what we have seen to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. On the day, participants will be encouraged to take photos of what they see so that they too can submit casual recordings to the National Biodiversity Data Centre.
As well as our walk on Cloncrow Bog, many of our member groups are orgainising events across the country at their wetland sites. These include:
- Sustainable Gardening Course at Cabragh Wetlands, Holycross, Co. Tipperary on 28th May. Details here.
- Family walk – Art & Biodiversity in Rathangan. Meet at Rathangan Library on Thursday 25th May at 6:30pm. Contact [email protected] to book your place.
