Turf, Propaganda and Independence (online event)

August 21 @ 19:30 - 21:00

The Brackna Turf Cooperative and a forgotten film from 1921.

In 1921 Gordon Lewis, Pathé’s newsreel cameraman in Ireland, joined Desmond Fitzgerald Minister for Publicity in the First Dáil, and others, to make a film about the efforts of the Brackna Turf Cooperative to raise funds by selling sods of turf
in America. The film also referenced the exhumation of the ‘Ballynowlart Martyrs’ in 1917 and ‘Cattle Drives’ on the ‘Ballynowlart Estate’ some four years earlier. The film was never completed and was stored in a number of seemingly disconnected
sections in the Pathe archives.

On Wednesday 21 August a newly edited version of the film will be screened online. The screening will be preceded by a talk on the background to the film by Laurence Fullam.
