Land access for community led wetland conservation

June 27 @ 10:30 - 16:30

Join us in The Íontas Theatre, Castleblayney, Co, Monaghan on 27th June for a one day workshop to explore challenges and opportunities for land access for community led wetland conservation projects.

The workshop will explore successes and barriers to accessing land for community wetland conservation and stewardship projects. It will hear from members of the Community Wetlands Forum who own sites, have successfully negotiated leases with landowners, and others who have successful collaborative arrangements with local farmers and landowners. It will also hear from those who have faced challenges and barriers when seeking to purchase, or aquire access to sites to further conservation objectives.

As well as members of the CWF, the workshop will hear the perspectives of academics, NGOs and semi-states working in the space. We will hear the views and experiences of all in attendance via Q&A sessions and small group discussions.

The aim will be to collectively and collaboratively identify and address challenges and opportunities for a community focused model of land access and stewardship for wetland conservation, whether that be in the form of a community land trust, or other possible innovations

In light of the climate and biodiversity crises, ongoing access and resourcing challenges faced by community groups, and the interest of private finance and the carbon market in peatland restoration, ensuring communities are empowered to undertake conservation, management and stewardship of wetlands is crucial.

There will be a light lunch provided. After the workshop, we will be guided on a biodiverstiy walk of Lough Muckno park by local communtiy group, Friends of Lough Muckno.
