Exploring Cloughjordan’s local Townlands with Archaeologist Caimin Ó Brien
A 20km cycle loop around wider Cloughjordan including Scohaboy Bog and Sopwell Woodlands, learning about the names, origins and histories of local Townlands. A townland is a small geographical division of land used in Ireland. The townland system is of Gaelic origin, pre-dating the Norman invasion, and most have names of Irish Gaelic origin. However, some townland names and boundaries come from Norman manors, plantation divisions, or later creations of the Ordnance Survey. The cycle will include a visit to Cowbawn Big and see renovation works on a 250 year old historical farmhouse and its connection to a Townland name. Please note: this is a cycling event and you will need to bring a bike. Bikes will not be provided.
